Ocala, Florida Activities

Ocala, Florida may be a small town of only 35,000 but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty to do.  In fact, there is a LOT to do here.  In this page, I will point out some of my favorites and maybe they will become your favorites also.

First and foremost is the downtown area.  Now, I have always loved old downtowns and Ocala is no different.  Cool, old brick buildings with a ton of history just are so intriguing.

The focus here is the town square.  It is full of shops, restaurants, bars and more all based around a small park with a pavilion in the middle.  The park is used for concerts, weddings and more.  It is a very popular spot.

My favorite restaurant is located on the square.  Named Harry’s, it is a New Orleans style cuisine and tables on the sidewalk.  Inside the décor is the brick I enjoy so much.  Just a classy and cool place with great food.

There is also a popular billiards room and my favorite shop, an olive oil business.  You walk into the ancient old building and the walls are full of olive oil that you can sample.  It is run by a little old lady who is incredibly sweet.  Just a great experience.

Another place to go when you need something to do is visit a park,  Ocala is full of great parks including Coehadjoe Park, Tuscawilla Park, and Brick City Park.  Brick City actually has a cave that you can take a guided tour through which is incredible.

Coehadjoe Park is a recreation lovers dream.  Since I love sports so much, it is my kind of place.  It features basketball courts, tennis courts, pickleball, walking trails and playgrounds for the kids.

The third place that you should check out in Ocala is the outdoor mall.  Located on Highway 200, this mall consists of stores connected together, all with outside entrances.

You can park and walk the massive parking area and find pretty much everything.  There are restaurants, bookstores, bars, Dicks sporting goods, and plenty of other choices.  It is a great place to spend the day or a couple of hours.

Lastly, I highly recommend the Central Florida College sports programs.  It is amazing to watch college athletes perform at a high level for such a low price.  It is the best bargain in Ocala!

The men’s basketball team is the standout.  They are always in the hunt for national championships and their coach is currently in the Hall Of Fame!

The arena is small and cozy without a bad seat in the house.  For five dollars, you can sit on the front row and watch future Division 1 college players and possibly pros play.

This is undoubtedly the best kept secret in town as you can always find a seat regardless of the ranking of the team.

This is just a list of a few activities in Ocala, Florida that are highly recommended.  There are plenty more.
