If you are searching for a quick way to change a sand or dirt lot into a beautiful and lush lawn, then it is time to install sod. It is hard work? Absolutely. But the rewards of sod installation is amazing and so worth it.
Before you consider installation, you will need to measure and calculate the total square yards you need your new lawn to cover. Find a long measuring tape and measure the width and length of the coverage area and multiply the two numbers. This will give you the square footage.
If by chance you yard has an irregular shape, break it down into smaller portions and individually measure them.
When you have figured the square yardage total, you are ready to purchase your topsoil. Check several suppliers to find the best deal. Usually local landscaping companies are your best bet.
The topsoil must form a layer a minimum of 6 inches deep over the new lawn area so your must purchase enough to make that happen. A landscaping soil supplier will deliver the topsoil if needed.
Now, its time to get to work! You can hire the local landscaping company, or you can do it yourself. But either way the soil must be spread evenly across the entire area.
If the yard is small, a wheelbarrow and rake will be plenty as far as tools go. However, if the area is bigger, it will need a tractor to spread the soil.
Now that the topsoil is down, make sure to compress it. If a tractor was used, it is already compressed and just needs the surface to be raked. If you spread it by hand, the soil needs to be rolled before raking. A roller can be rented or purchased.
When the area is ready, order the sod. Ensure that the sod doesn’t arrive before you are ready to lay it as it quickly deteriorates.
Again, a good landscaping company will deliver the sod directly to you when the time is right.
Laying the sod is very similar to building a brick wall as the seams don’t line up. Start the first line of sod with sod that is full-length and then use a half-length next. Continue to alternate the rest of the way.
After all the sod is on the ground, it is time to roll the surface. This takes care of any air pockets and pushes the turf into the soil. Now water the lawn daily for the next 2-3 weeks to promote growth.
Sodding is the fastest way to create a beautiful lawn. Call a landscaping company and get started today!
