The 7 Principles Of Landscaping Design

Standards or principles  of landscaping design refer to arranging or working with various elements to create a project according to plan.  There are seven main principles that good landscape designers should follow:

  • Balance
  • Rhythm
  • Unity
  • Proportion
  • Transition
  • Repetition
  • Emphasis

Balance refers to the design having a sense of symmetry in visual attractiveness.  This is presented in three ways:

  • Symmetrical balance is achieved when the weight, mass, or total of objects is exactly the same on both side of the design.
  • Asymmetrical balance is when the two sides don’t look the same but create a feeling of balance nonetheless.
  • Radial balance refers to the landscape having a center point.  Examples include a wheel or a sunflower.

Rhythm is a motion feeling that directs the eye from one part of the design to another.  This is done by such things as repeating a color scheme, texture, shape or line.  Rhythm helps to eliminate monotony from landscaper design.

Unity is using elements to create consistency and harmony with the main idea or theme of the design.  This principle gives the project a sense of interconnection or oneness.  It can be achieved by utilizing trees, plants, or materials with repeating shapes or lines.

Proportion involves the size relationship between the design parts.  In other words, the design must match the space!  Proportion must also take into account the interaction between people and the components of the project.

Transition develops movement in design that is visual. This is achieved by progressing gradually with form, color, size and texture. An  example includes softscapes that change from trees that are large, to medium, to shrubs, to plants.  It is used also to create distance or depth.

Repetition is exactly what it sounds like; the repeating of the use of elements or objects with identical form, color, texture or shape.

And finally, emphasis directs your attention to a prominent part of the design or a point of interest.  It may also be used by contrasting colors, using unusual lines or background spaces that are plain.

The 7 main Principles Of Landscaping Design should be kept in mind before undertaking any type of home improvement task.
